PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*

By Gays for Gays | We Make Gay Art Visible

* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

The Chin in His Hand – Men on an Equal Playing Field in Ancient Greece, Gay Art

He holds his chin in his hand. Not to guide him – but to look at him. The younger man looks back. Directly. Not up, not away. Two men at eye level, even if one is older. There is no power imbalance. This is an encounter.

This shard – photographed on a white background, clear and without distraction – shows the motif in all its serenity. No dramatic background, no sunlight, no marble. Just the scene itself. And it is enough.

The Greeks called it Anteros – reciprocal love. It's not one desiring and the other tolerating. Both desire. Both look. Plato describes it in the Phaedrus: In the older man's reflection, the younger man feels his own desire returned. What he sees is his own longing.

Consensual Eroticism – Not Abuse

Greek pederasty is often misunderstood today. Yet it differs fundamentally from what we now call abuse:

The ephebes were not children. The eromenos was a youth after puberty – in ancient understanding already on his way to manhood, at 18 a full citizen with rights and duties.

There were rules and control. The youth's father had to agree. The eromenos had the right to refuse and to change his erastes. The relationship was public – no hiding, no secrecy.

Both sides desired. In the Phaedrus, Plato describes Anteros – reciprocal love: the younger man also feels desire, he also loves back. Not one-sided submission, but mutual desire.

It was socially accepted. The relationship was considered education, an honor, a duty. The Sacred Band of Thebes – 150 male couples, undefeated for 30 years – was its military monument.

Pedophilia, which is rightly punishable, targets pre-pubescent children without maturity and without a voice. Greek pederasty was a socially organized institution with rules, dignity, and mutual desire. Equating the two is factually and historically incorrect.

Nothing is more beautiful than...

In Japan, during the annual fertility festival, they parade giant symbolic phalluses through the city. I confess, I, being crazy about cocks, wish we had this gesture in our culture too. As boys, we wake up one morning with a wooden feeling between our legs, and from then on, there's no peace. During puberty, it stands up at every inappropriate moment, no matter what we're thinking. Later, it reminds us every morning, having turned into a latte, that it controls us. That's no real excuse for harassing women with dick pics. But as gay men, we at least have one privilege: we are quite free to show each other our tools and be ecstatic about the other's. To art that elevates our fantasy
