PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*
By Gays for Gays | We Make Gay Art Visible
* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

The Face in His Hand – Tenderness Between Men in Ancient Greece, Gay Art
He holds his face in his hand. Not roughly. Not demanding. His fingers cup the younger man's chin and cheek – guiding, yet gentle. The younger man looks up. Directly into his face. No looking away, no hesitation. This is not a grip. This is tenderness.
This shard – laid on stone in the sunlight, broken yet complete in what it shows – is perhaps the most intimate image in the entire series. No explicit physical contact. Just two faces, a hand, and the moment just before the kiss. Painted 2,500 years ago. Still palpable today.
The Greeks would have said: Eros was in the room. Not the little Cupid with bow and arrow of the later Romans – but the original Eros, whom Hesiod describes as the primal force of the world. The force that draws two bodies together. The force that is still palpable in this image.
Consensual Eroticism – Not Abuse
Greek pederasty is often misunderstood today. Yet, it differs fundamentally from what we now call abuse:
The ephebes were not children. The eromenos was a youth past puberty – in ancient understanding, already on the path to manhood, a full citizen with rights and duties at 18 years old.
There were rules and control. The youth's father had to agree. The eromenos had the right to refuse and change his erastes. The relationship was public – no hiding, no secrecy.
Both sides desired. Plato describes in Phaedrus the anteros – reciprocal love: the younger man also feels pleasure, he also loves back. Not one-sided submission, but mutual desire.
It was socially desired. The relationship was considered education, an honor, a duty. The Sacred Band of Thebes – 150 male couples, undefeated for 30 years – was its military monument.
Pedophilia, which is rightly punishable, targets pre-pubescent children without maturity and without a voice. Greek pederasty was a socially organized institution with rules, dignity, and mutual desire. To equate the two is factually and historically incorrect.

Nothing is more beautiful than...
In Japan, during the annual fertility festival, they parade giant symbolic phalluses through the city. I confess, I, being crazy about cocks, wish we had this gesture in our culture too. As boys, we wake up one morning with a wooden feeling between our legs, and from then on, there's no peace. During puberty, it stands up at every inappropriate moment, no matter what we're thinking. Later, it reminds us every morning, having turned into a latte, that it controls us. That's no real excuse for harassing women with dick pics. But as gay men, we at least have one privilege: we are quite free to show each other our tools and be ecstatic about the other's. To art that elevates our fantasy
