The Handle – Erotic Encounters in Ancient Greece
The older man stands behind the younger one. His hand reaches forward – determined, clear, deliberate. The younger one bends slightly forward, allowing it to happen, accepting it. No resistance. No hiding. This scene on an Attic kylix, painted 2,500 years ago, depicts erotic desire between men as directly as Greek society knew it: open, physical, natural.
What museums today catalog as a “wrestling scene” was something else for the Greeks. The younger man’s body is relaxed, not tense. The posture is surrender, not struggle. The older man’s hand seeks pleasure, not victory.
Consensual Eroticism – Not Abuse
Greek pederasty is often misunderstood today. However, it differs fundamentally from what we now call abuse:
The ephebes were not children. The eromenos was a young man after puberty – in ancient understanding already on his way to becoming a man, at 18 years old a full citizen with rights and duties.

Pedophilia, which is rightly punishable, targets prepubescent children without maturity and without a voice. Greek pederasty was a socially organized institution with rules, dignity, and mutual desire. Equating the two is factually and historically incorrect.
