PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*
By Gays for Gays | We Make Gay Art Visible
* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

Gay Art in the Style of Simeon Solomon - The First Kiss
Two men. On the verge of a kiss. Golden robes, red cloth, roses in hand. What you see should never have existed – not in Victorian England, not in art history, not on the walls of the Royal Academy.
Simeon Solomon, whose artistic mastery we are reviving with this painting, knew that. He was a Pre-Raphaelite – a member of a revolutionary art movement that rebelled against the cold perfection of the academies, seeking beauty, spirituality, and intense sensuality instead. He loved men and painted them as saints, as angels, as ancient youths. Connoisseurs understood what lay hidden behind the cipher. But the kiss he truly wanted to paint, he was never allowed to show. In 1873, he was arrested. His friends turned away. Art history erased him. He died alone in a London workhouse in 1905.
Had he painted this picture, England would have been different.
We paint it for him. Without cipher. Without hiding. Two men kissing – tenderly, beautifully, naturally. This picture hangs in your living room, where guests see it. In the bedroom, where only you see it. Everywhere where the most beautiful things belong – visible, proud, without apology.

Nothing is more beautiful than...
In Japan, during the annual fertility festival, they parade giant symbolic phalluses through the city. I confess, I, being crazy about cocks, wish we had this gesture in our culture too. As boys, we wake up one morning with a wooden feeling between our legs, and from then on, there's no peace. During puberty, it stands up at every inappropriate moment, no matter what we're thinking. Later, it reminds us every morning, having turned into a latte, that it controls us. That's no real excuse for harassing women with dick pics. But as gay men, we at least have one privilege: we are quite free to show each other our tools and be ecstatic about the other's. To art that elevates our fantasy
