Golden light falls on two men kissing. Their hands find their way – to the face, to the hip – wherever touch means closeness and closeness says everything. This kiss is not a greeting. It is a promise.
Marble columns, laurel wreaths – the same temple as always, that world where male love had dignity and needed no apology. Simeon Solomon painted rooms like these – the most significant gay artist of Victorian England, who clothed his truth in saints and youths because he could not openly show it. We paint in his style and after his genius – and show what he could never show.
Solomon was not a marginal figure. Rossetti valued him, Wilde admired him, the Royal Academy showed his work. After his arrest in 1873 for homosexuality, his friends fell silent – not out of indifference, but out of fear. To associate with a convicted man in Victorian England risked one's own reputation, freedom, and life. The art world turned away. Solomon died in 1905 in a London workhouse – alone and forgotten.

About Simeon Solomon (1840–1905)
Simeon Solomon was one of the most talented painters of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His works depict a world of gold, myrrh, and longing – saints, angels, youths in intimate proximity. Rossetti valued him, Oscar Wilde admired him. In 1873, he was arrested for loving a man. The art world turned away. He died in 1905 in a London workhouse. Today he is considered an icon of queer art history.
