Gay Art in the Style of Simeon Solomon - A Kiss in Antiquity
Marble columns, golden light. Two men in ancient robes – laurel wreaths in their hair. They kiss. One hand gently holds the other's chin. Simeon Solomon would probably have loved to paint exactly such pictures – but he wouldn't have been allowed to. What he painted was a disguise: saints, angels, youths who betrayed no one. Connoisseurs understood. Victorian England did not – and saw no reason to question it. Until Solomon himself became proof, his homosexuality became his undoing.
Rossetti appreciated him, Oscar Wilde admired him. Simeon Solomon belonged to the inner circle of leading painters of his time – no outsider, but right in the middle. At eighteen, his work hung in the Royal Academy. At twenty, he was a giant. In 1873, it all ended: arrested because he loved a man. His friends remained silent. The art world turned away. He died in 1905 in a London workhouse – forgotten, impoverished, alone.
Had he painted this picture, the world would have been different.
