Gay Art in the Simeon Solomon Style - Come to me - Gay Longing in an Ancient Bath
Candlelight on marble. Steam above the water. A young man kneels naked by the pool's edge, reaching out to his lover in the water. Both naked, which would have been unthinkable at the time we set the scene. We further the story and show what gay men wanted and secretly did even back then, in the "morally strict" Victorian English kingdom. The man from the pool's edge will immediately slide into the water, to his lover. And they will do what two gay men do when they feel their naked bodies.
It is a vision of love and lust that – we are sure – Simeon Solomon, the painter whose artistic genius we have borrowed from, would have appreciated. He knew these moments all too well. He knew the tension between two men who loved each other. He, the gay painter, was never allowed to paint men who felt like him – he created saintly figures with wonderfully beautiful androgynous male faces as a disguise. We paint, we are convinced, in his spirit: what he carried within himself and had to hide.
For a long time, he was celebrated, admired, part of London's art elite. The young Oscar Wilde loved his work. In 1873, Solomon was arrested – for loving a man. The art world abandoned him. He died alone and impoverished in 1905. What he was never allowed to show, this picture reveals.

About Simeon Solomon (1840–1905)
Solomon painted longing – between men, veiled in gold and halo, because he was not allowed to show it openly. Rossetti valued him, Wilde admired him. 1873 arrest, silence, impoverishment. Today an icon of gay art history.
