We're bringing the Grindr generation into the 19th century. Out of the app, into a lavish palace of marble and golden light. And because we're generous, we're giving these two sweet twinks a halo – a golden, heart-shaped one that frames precisely what the Church of Rome never wanted and still doesn't want to bless: a gay couple. Our image gives all gays their blessing back.
One of the lovers wears only a white silk cloth, tied low around his hips – timeless, it could always have been so. His beloved has brought a dark red velvet blazer from the present: open, chest bare, but with gold buttons like something from a painting of that era. Forehead to forehead, the two partners stand, noses almost touching, eyes closed.
Why this halo? Because Simeon Solomon did exactly that – but hidden. The celebrated painter of Victorian England smuggled a gay perspective into the churches of his time: saints with the faces of desirable young men, devotion as a disguise for lust. Those who wanted to see it, saw it. The others saw pious art. In 1873, he was exposed – arrested for homosexual acts, the end of his career. What remained: paintings full of hidden longing.
