PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*

By Gays for Gays | We Make Gay Art Visible

* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

Gay Art - Philippe d'Orléans & Chevalier de Lorraine – Great Gay Love at the Court of Versailles #2

The Chevalier pulls the half-undressed Philippe towards him from behind. His hands rest on the bare chest – one holding, the other caressing. His lips seek the cheek, the neck, intimacy. Philippe does not close his eyes. He looks into the room, calm, as if this were the most natural thing in the world. The love play may begin.

At the court of Louis XIV, it was.

The Chevalier de Lorraine was not Philippe's secret. He was his life partner – known, tolerated, part of court life. What history concealed: what it looked like when they were alone. This painting shows it. But what passed as aristocratic freedom at court was a death sentence elsewhere. For men without title, without royal protection, without the luxury of decadence, the same act was a crime – pursued, punished, obliterated. Philippe and the Chevalier lived what others were not even allowed to think.

History in Oil

The painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, one of the most important representatives of the French Rococo, captured the gallant life of the court in vibrant colors. The court painter François Boucher, favorite painter of Madame de Pompadour, painted pastoral idylls and courtly pleasures. What neither of them ever painted: the men who desired each other. KUNSTWERK BILDER catches up on what art history omitted.

About Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) & François Boucher (1703–1770)

Fragonard and Boucher were the great masters of the French Rococo. Their works depict life at court – playful, sensual, full of lightness. Boucher painted the king's mistresses, Fragonard the pleasures of the aristocracy. What they never painted: the men who desired each other. This painting closes that gap.

Nothing is more beautiful than...

In Japan, during the annual fertility festival, they parade giant symbolic phalluses through the city. I confess, I, being crazy about cocks, wish we had this gesture in our culture too. As boys, we wake up one morning with a wooden feeling between our legs, and from then on, there's no peace. During puberty, it stands up at every inappropriate moment, no matter what we're thinking. Later, it reminds us every morning, having turned into a latte, that it controls us. That's no real excuse for harassing women with dick pics. But as gay men, we at least have one privilege: we are quite free to show each other our tools and be ecstatic about the other's. To art that elevates our fantasy
