He stands behind him. His body close, too close for coincidence. His hand seeks support – or closeness, or both. The other allows it to happen, leaning back almost imperceptibly. Candlelight falls on silk and lace, on two men who, at the court of Versailles, do what officially does not exist: desire.
Philippe d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, and his life partner Chevalier de Lorraine lived their love openly – as openly as an absolutist court would allow. Everyone knew. No one spoke of it. This tension is in this image. They could dare because they could afford it: nobility, blood, royal protection. What was a privilege for them was life-threatening for other men of their time. What jurists then called "sodomy" – the catch-all term for any sexuality outside of marriage and procreation, including sex between men – was punishable by death. The court's silence was not a sign of tolerance – it was the decadence of the powerful.

The painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, one of the most important representatives of French Rococo, captured the gallant life of the court in vibrant colors. The court painter François Boucher, favorite painter of Madame de Pompadour, painted pastoral idylls and courtly amusements. What neither of them ever painted: the men who desired each other. About Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) & François Boucher (1703–1770)
Fragonard and Boucher were the great masters of French Rococo. Their works show life at court – playful, sensual, full of lightness. Boucher painted the king's mistresses, Fragonard the aristocracy's amusements. What they never painted: the men who desired each other. This image closes that gap.
