In the midst of darkness, two men, almost naked in a daring image. One holds the other from behind – and runs his tongue over his neck. Lust that spares nothing. The beloved throws his head back, eyes closed, mouth open. This is not a tender moment. This is desire that takes what it wants. You have to be able to paint that. Caravaggio could have, the great master of the Baroque, could have and certainly would have wanted to, because he was openly gay. He managed to live gay, at least; he wasn't allowed to actually paint gay.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610): Killer, drunkard, genius – and the most openly gay painter of his time. In an era when sodomy – a term then used to slander sex between men – was punishable by death, he lived as he was and as he was born. His desire for men was not a marginal detail of his life – it was the core of his vision. The bodies he painted, the intensity, the closeness, the light on skin and muscles: no straight person painted like that. Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte took him into his palazzo – as a protégé, as an artist, as a man to whom he gave more than just commissions. What was between them, history discreetly kept silent. The paintings did not.
