Caravaggio, the world-famous artist whose style was our template, painted men in extreme moments – pain, ecstasy, desire. Yet, he never depicted such a moment between two men as we have drawn from his art. Because he was not allowed to.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) lived in an era when sodomy – a term used then to slander sex between men – was punishable by death. Nevertheless, he lived as he was born: gay. Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte took him into his palazzo – offering protection, lodging, and commissions. Whether sex was also involved between them has often been speculated, but is not proven.
