Two men, muscular, almost naked. Their hands reach out, firm and sure. No hesitation, no hiding. This is gay passion with the weight of Rubens' bodies and the darkness of Caravaggio. Designed by us today with high regard for Caravaggio, the bad boy of the Baroque.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610): Thug, drunkard, genius – and the most openly gay painter of his time. In an era when sodomy – the term used to malign sex between men – was punishable by death, he lived as he was. Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte took him into his palazzo – as a protégé, as an artist, as a man to whom he gave more than just commissions. What transpired between them has been discreetly omitted by history. Not by the paintings.
Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640): The Fleming painted bodies like no other – muscles, flesh, weight, life. Men in his works are not silhouettes; they are strength. He never painted a kiss between two men. This does – with his bodies, Caravaggio's darkness, and what both omitted.
This image is not purely Caravaggio and not purely Rubens – it is both at the same time. This is how we wanted it, how we tried it. A conscious experiment: the darkness and drama of one, the bodies and musculature of the other. Two giants of the Baroque, brought together for a moment neither of them was ever allowed to paint.
A new image that was never painted. But should have been painted. Had to be painted. History painting in oil. What the old masters had to conceal and omit, this picture reveals.
