PICTURES THAT WERE NEVER PAINTED*
By Gays for Gays | We Make Gay Art Visible
* Almost all of the artists to whom we attribute our images never painted gay subjects, although many were gay themselves. We show what they were not allowed to paint.

NAZARENER meets Gay Love - Tender Touch
Inspired by the Nazarenes, a group of German painters who moved to Rome in the early 19th century to realize their vision of art, we present here gay art of a very special kind: The colors – warm, radiant, sensual – might feel more at home in Italy than in Germany. And that is exactly the point: Two young men, a kiss – and the world around them becomes the backdrop of their love.
The landscape in the background – a tree, gentle hills, wide sky – is more than decoration: It is the space where feelings are free to breathe. The gesture is quiet but clear. No grand staging, no drama – just the touch of two people who know what they want.
NAZARENE meets Gay Love – Romance with Italian warmth
The Nazarenes painted with warm colors, Italian light, and a longing for harmony and beauty. This wall painting transfers this aesthetic into a queer love scene – showing that romance knows no bounds.
For your home: A work of art that gives courage, celebrates beauty, and shows that love in all its forms is the most noble thing we know.
About the Nazarenes (circa 1810–1830)
The Nazarenes were a group of German painters who moved to Rome in the early 19th century to create a new, spiritually inspired art. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance and German romanticism, they painted with warm colors, clear lines, and a longing for harmony and beauty. Their most important representatives were Friedrich Overbeck, Peter von Cornelius, and Wilhelm von Schadow. Their art combines northern inwardness with southern lightness – a bridge between two worlds.

Nothing is more beautiful than...
In Japan, during the annual fertility festival, they parade giant symbolic phalluses through the city. I confess, I, being crazy about cocks, wish we had this gesture in our culture too. As boys, we wake up one morning with a wooden feeling between our legs, and from then on, there's no peace. During puberty, it stands up at every inappropriate moment, no matter what we're thinking. Later, it reminds us every morning, having turned into a latte, that it controls us. That's no real excuse for harassing women with dick pics. But as gay men, we at least have one privilege: we are quite free to show each other our tools and be ecstatic about the other's. To art that elevates our fantasy
