RENOIR - SEXISMUS UND GENIE

Bilder, die nie gemalt wurden - Ab jetzt wird es schwul

Some painters are known before you realize you know them. Renoir is one of them. The dancing couples in "Moulin de la Galette," the skin against the light, the shimmering of summer afternoons on the Seine – these images are burned into our collective memory long before we learn the name. Renoir painted happiness as if it were a state of matter in the world.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges in 1841, the son of a tailor. Not a bourgeois home, no predetermined path. At thirteen, he painted porcelain in a factory – precisely, quickly, with an eye for surface and light that never left him. Paris, the École des Beaux-Arts, Monet as a friend and fellow artist. Together, they developed a language that the academy despised and the public initially ridiculed: Impressionism. No smooth contours, no heroic subjects. Instead, the fleeting light on water, on skin, on fabric. Life as it feels, not as it should look.

Renoir became its most famous representative. Not because he was the most radical – Monet went further, Cézanne thought deeper – but because he was the most sensual. His paintings beg to be touched. They radiate warmth like skin in the sun.

"I paint with my penis."
— Pierre-Auguste Renoir

This statement was not intended as a provocation, but was his serious confession: women were material for him – bodies that exist to be painted. He denied them intellect, treated them as objects. Not because he was gay; he was a thoroughly sexist straight man.

Therefore, if this Renoir had painted gay motifs, it would not even have been desirable. We do not need or want such a character. We only want his genius.

Renoir was the painter of French Impressionism – no one else translated light, skin, and tenderness into color quite like him. KUNSTWERK BILDER appropriates precisely this visual language: his technique, his light, his sensual immediacy. And shows what gay love would have looked like if someone with Renoir's skill, and only his skill, had painted it. We leave the awkward character to art history.
